Floods in Libya: the Red Cross takes action

12 September 2023

Thousands of people died and tens of thousands more lost everything when a dam burst and failed to withstand the torrential rains of storm Daniel. The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies is preparing to respond to the authorities’ appeal for international aid by providing support to the Libyan Red Crescent.

Tamer Ramadan, head of delegation for Libya at the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, said: “The number of missing is close to 10,000. We don’t have definitive figures“. He added: “The humanitarian needs far exceed the capacities of the Libyan Red Crescent and even the capacities of the government. This is why the government in the east has launched an appeal for international aid, and why we too will be launching an emergency appeal shortly“.

The Luxembourg Red Cross is calling for donations to be made by transfer to CCP account LU52 1111 0000 1111 0000 with the message “Inondations Libye” or by clicking on the link below, while keeping its “Morocco earthquake” campaign active for the victims of the earthquake.
