Democratic Republic of the Congo: humanitarian disaster following heavy rains

08 May 2023

In the Democratic Republic of the Congo, heavy rains in early May in the South Kivu region caused severe flooding and landslides, devastating villages and killing nearly 400 people, according to the latest official figures.

The Luxembourg Red Cross, which has been present in the east of the country for several years, quickly mobilized to provide emergency shelter and essential household and hygiene items to those affected. The Panzi Hospital and Foundation, of which we are partners in South Kivu, has also sent a medical team and basic supplies to the area.
