Climate Competent Project (CliC): Raising Young People’s Awareness of Climate Disasters

One of the most visible effects of climate change is the increasing number of natural disasters around the world. Unfortunately, Luxembourg has not been spared. In recent years, the country has faced several cycles of flooding, heatwaves, and storms, as well as a tornado in Pétange in 2019!

In the face of these growing risks, it is important to be prepared.

  • How can I prepare myself?
  • How can I help others?
  • How can I take care of myself, physically and mentally?
  • How can I manage my emotions during a stressful event?
  • How can I recognize signs of mental distress?

To provide answers to all these questions, the CliC – Climate Competent project has developed fun and educational activities for young people. These activities are gathered in a handbook intended for educators who wish to implement them. The activities are divided into 5 modules:

Introduction to climate change

This module helps participants understand what climate change is, how our daily choices contribute to it, and how its effects are already being felt in Luxembourg.

Through interactive games and discussions, participants explore the impact of different lifestyles, discover the main climate risks in Luxembourg, and reflect together on what they have learned.

Preparation for climate disasters

This module explains how good preparation can make it easier to manage emergency situations.

Participants will learn where to find reliable information, how to stay connected, what to do in case of evacuation or sheltering at home, and what to include in an emergency kit.

What to Do in the Event of Climate Disasters – First Aid

This module explains how to respond during a climate disaster. Participants will practice the right reflexes and quick decision-making through realistic scenarios and role-playing activities.

They will learn essential safety instructions, how to react to different types of emergencies, and how to help others without putting themselves at risk. The module also covers first aid techniques while waiting for emergency services to arrive.

The impact of climate disasters on me and my community – Mental health

This module explores how disasters and climate change affect us not only physically, but also emotionally and socially. Participants will explore the feelings that may arise after a disaster, learn simple coping strategies, and understand the importance of mutual support.

Through games, discussions, and group activities, they will also practice basic psychological first aid – learning how to help friends, relatives, and community members feel safe, calm, and supported after a crisis.

Climate justice

This module serves as an introduction to the concepts of climate justice and global responsibility in the context of climate change. Participants will gain a better understanding of how the impacts of climate change are distributed and realize that the countries most affected are not necessarily those contributing the most to climate change.

The Service National de la Jeunesse is responsible for implementing this programme in Luxembourg.
