Severe flash floods have struck several regions of Nepal, causing numerous casualties and widespread damage. Villages have been swept away, roads and bridges destroyed, and many people are still missing. Current estimates indicate that more than 10,000 families have been affected. The scale of the disaster has created an urgent and considerable need for emergency assistance.
According to initial reports, a major ice avalanche occurred in the border area between Nepal and China. It may have triggered a significant glacial outburst and a sudden flood. The resulting flood affected downstream areas, particularly the districts of Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading and Chitwan, where landslides, flooding, and loss of life and property have been reported.
The Luxembourg Red Cross has been active in Nepal since 2008, as part of a delegated management partnership with the Nepal Red Cross Society (NRCS). Since the beginning of this partnership, programmes implemented in Nepal have focused primarily on responding to natural disasters, particularly earthquakes, landslides and monsoon-related floods. The district of Dhading, which has also been affected, is of particular importance to the Luxembourg Red Cross, which implemented activities there during the previous phase of its intervention in Nepal.
Support people affected by the floods in Nepal
The region is completely cut off, and aid can currently only be delivered by helicopter. There is no electricity or mobile network. Figures communicated to the International Committee of the Red Cross by the government indicate that six districts have been affected, with 65 confirmed deaths and around 1,000 people reported missing. Between 8,000 and 10,000 people are mobilized to provide assistance, including members of the army, the national Red Cross and the police.
On the field, the Nepal Red Cross is working alongside the authorities and affected communities. Its teams are supporting search and rescue operations, assessing the needs of affected populations and providing emergency assistance to people who have been evacuated. This includes distributing drinking water, food, hygiene items, blankets and equipment to help families find shelter.
