More space, more quality: the childcare center and the nursery in Lorentzweiler have been expanded!

On May 14, 2025, the renovated and expanded Jos Wohlfart school complex in Lorentzweiler was officially inaugurated in the presence of Minister of Education Claude Meisch and Mayor Marguy Kirsch-Hirtt – an important milestone for inclusive education and high-quality childcare. The Luxembourg Red Cross manages the childcare center and nursery there with great dedication and professional expertise.
What do these new spaces hide? And how is quality maintained despite the expansion? We spoke with the two heads of the facilities.
What has improved in your facility thanks to the new construction?
Laura Speltz (Nursery): We now have twice as many groups, new spaces for communication, and a strengthened management team. This allows us to better address the needs of the youngest children.
Franz Reuter (Childcare center): We have new themed rooms, quieter dining areas, and even a playground that we designed with the children and parents. It was a real community project!
How do you maintain quality despite the larger structure?
Laura Speltz (Nursery): Our crèche has expanded from four to eight groups, but the group size remains the same – this is sacred to us. It’s important for us to address the individual needs of the children, and this approach is shared by our whole team. Through continuous training and regular exchanges within the team, the child, with their interests and needs, remains at the heart of our work.
Franz Reuter (Childcare center): The size of our facility presents challenges for the individual care of the children. However, an increase in the number of children also means we have more professionals available. In particular, in Cycle 1, we place great importance on organizing the day in small groups. For example, we offer different afternoon workshops that children can sign up for. As a team, we also focus on relationship-building, which we regularly discuss in our team meetings. Our goal is for everyone to feel comfortable and welcome in our facility.
